CLIMATE CHANGE AND THE WAR ON NATURE

We’re looking at like 60 trillion dollars of climate damage by the end of the century. That’s doubly the amount of wealth that exist in the world today and it’s gonna disrupt everything from our economic model to our politics to our societies in the way that we engage in like to other human beings, it’s gonna threaten and change our education. It’s gonna destabilize regions and damage access to clean food and clean water, it’s gonna disrupt our agriculture. It’s really really really bad. And it’s gonna get a lot worse.

CLIMATE CHANGE IS THREATHENING THE FABRIC OF HUMAN CIVILIZATION

Fossil fuel industry is raping the earth to take the oil and to take the resources. It represents the violence that does not care for human life, that values greed and corporate profit over the survival and the health of the people. Every single thing in our culture is a reflection of that violence, from our food to our clothing, to our energy, to our education and our prison system.

WE ARE AT WAR WITH NATURE

Here, in one the wealthiest nations on Earth, the richest people are very afraid of any kind of justice that would redistribute equally to the people and that would protect the most basic human rights of clean water, of clean air and healthy climate. And those that suffer the most are people of color. My people, el pueblo.

AN ENVIRONMENTAL RACISM

That power over Nature, power over Earth, power over women is what is fed to us every single day. Patriarchy, capitalism and white supremacy: those three things are the foundation of the system of oppression that creates the dysfunction we see today.

IT IS IN THE VERY FABRIC OF THE USA

We can even hear about climate change, we can hear about raising sea levels, we can see footage of people, people houses being washed away. We can hear the statistics that will face a billion people displaced by climate change by the end of century and 200 million in the next 30 years. We can hear and feel and see that, and still do nothing. Because we are disconnected from that. Because when we look at Nature, we don’t see us, we see it as something outside of us, something that is separate. When we feel rain we don&rsquo;t see it as a blessing or a gift from creation. We see that as weather.

It&rsquo;s a change of mentality that is a result of me, looking at my lifestyle and the way I live my life and to say that I have a responsabilty. I have a part to play in this. It’s acknowledging that we, as humans, this is our world and we are, we belong to it more than it belongs to us. Changing these small lifestyle habits is like acknowledging that these things are power because and that’s acknowledging the connections that our lives have to the rest of this web.

WE NEED A IDEOLOGOCAL SHIFT

The way in which we indigenous people operate as societies, as civilizations was to find balance and to live deeply connected with the web of life rather then as conquerors of nature or just exploiting our resources. We see ourselves as pieces of creation. From flowers that are growing, to the rain that falls, to the summer that shines, that is where we find the divine, that&rsquo;s where we understand the sacredness of our existence.

WE NEED INDIGENOUS WISDOM

My people have been resisting the exploitation from corrupt power&lt; for over 5 hundred years. And we’re gonna keep resisting, we’re gonna keep fighting and we will win.

INDIGENOUS PEOPLE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN AT THE FOREFRONT

The tools that we have are our voices and our collective will to survive. Tap into this issue in a way that connects for you, you as a storyteller, you as a poet, you as a rapper, whatever. Those are all tools to get involved and to engage your life.

USE YOUR PASSIONS

If I&rsquo;m going to change the culture around there, I&rsquo;m going to be a part of that. I want to enter the mainstream, I want to get lots of plays. But the important part is to like really leave something behind that people can hold on to after that concert or after that conference or after that talk. And cultivating an energy that lasts and that plants those seeds that people will be able to go and cultivate on their own.

That story that kids are going to save the world, is alright. But we have to be careful of how we tell the story so that it doesn&rsquo;t relinquish adults of their responsibilities to be a part of this. I see so many adults being like « good job kid you&rsquo;re doing so good keep up the good work ». No ! They have to step in, more than they ever have ever before because we are ready to receive their support.
