At 11 years-old, Rene created “Voz das Comunidades”, the first media to share information and stories about his favela written by and for the community, “Voz das Comunidades”. He and his team of 16 journalists work on telling the story of inequalities, racism and resilience from the inside out. They also produce events for and in the favelas for children and their families. Rene believes in media of resistance and peer-to-peer resilience.

« Since I was a kid, I always read the newspaper with my grandfather. They would hardly talk about the favela or they would only focus on the gangs, drugs, guns. And I kept thinking: we need to do something. We need to show what really happens here, but from our perception, from what we live. »

As favelas inhabitants suffer stigmas and constant dishumanization by big media, Rene fights for their empowerment, dignity and access. In this context of increasing violence and inequalites, rene and is team want to socially transform their community.

« I still live in my favela and will never leave. My goal is to help the social transformation of this place,of slums or any other places with this vulnerability. Whatever I can do to contribute to the change I want, I will do. Because, the change we want depends on what we want to do and on how we will do it. »
