In winter here it snows and since the structure of the tent is really bad, some people die. If it rains, floods happen. There is a garbage crisis in here so all the garbage in the river comes inside the camps. Kids can&rsquo;t sleep anymore. When it&rsquo;s summer since the tents are made of plastic, a specific gas appears and diseases happen. And all that reflects on the kids&rsquo; daily lives and how they perceive themselves.

IN CAMPS, YOU ARE ALWAYS EXPOSED

When a child feels that they are worth nothing, he is just wasting their own lives. That will reflect in their psychological situation they feel useless and worthless. And then that will reflect on on the next generations.

CHILDREN FEEL WORTHELESSNESS

They have to secure some house incomes. That’s one of our main challenges. We’ve been trying to fight it by either educating the parents, either trying to find jobs for the parents or trying to contact other organizations that can support the parents financially, so the children can go to school.

Our school teaches normal classes like math, biology or English. So kids have a plan for the day, a routine. That makes their lives a bit more normal for them. It teaches them how to pay attention to time. They start valuing their time. Like :  » I should be in class at 8.30 not because the teacher said so, but because my being absent would affect me. » Classes will teach them something new. And that will make them different from the people around them.

SCHOOL MEANS TIME

School becomes something much, much bigger than just a place where you learn how to read and how to write. This is their school and they are developing themselves there by themselves. So that’s their place. It’s not their parent’s place. They weren’t forced to go to school. It’s a place they chose, it’s one of their choices. And it brings back their freedom of choice. And it’s really important they feel that they can make choices in their lives. So they feel that they are more powerful and responsible. It also brings back the sense of responsibility. ‘I can take responsibility for myself’ for example.

SCHOOL MEANS FREEDOM OF CHOICE

We try to enforce the idea that they matter and that they are much bigger than they think they are. We try to tell them that, even if they live in the camps, that doesn&rsquo;t mean that they are « less » or weaker. Their environment doesn&rsquo;t determine who they are.

SCHOOL MEANS DIGNITY

We are not victims we are not warriors or we are both. We are story tellers. We&rsquo;ve seen the worst face of the humanity as a whole and we should describe it to the people so they don&rsquo;t go through the same things and would try to avoid it and change it. If we don&rsquo;t tell that story then we basically lose the core reasons why we exist as people who survived the war.

They are much bigger than your sadness, than your emotions. They are much bigger than you think. They don&rsquo;t need your help. They need your support, they need materials. If you do, they will reach better places than we think they will.
